Making the NO VOTE visible

As the UK approaches a divisive election is it time citizens had a “No Vote” option at all elections?

It’s over a hundred years since the start of World War One and eighty years since D-Day. We should ask ourselves, is the democracy we have worthy of those who sacrificed their lives for it. Choosing not to vote used to be seen as disrespectful to the fallen, but the real disrespect is from those who have abused their positions of trust to the point where many of us have lost faith in politics and politicians.

There is presently no option to actively choose none of the candidates on a ballot paper and share your reasons for doing so – there should be, the views of all citizens are valid in a democracy. Non voters represent disengagement or dissatisfaction with a system that has lost touch with the people it is supposed to serve. The enormous size of the No Vote needs to be made more visible and understood.

Some say not voting lets bad candidates succeed, but if politics (not to be confused with democracy) has become a game where we vote for the best of a bad bunch just to keep the worst out, then the system we have created is clearly not a fitting tribute to anyone. It feels like time for an overhaul of the voting system, and let’s face it, if we all carry on voting for voting’s sake, nothing will change!
